Innocence

How does it feel to be able to go home every day? Being able to see your family and know that they are truly OK. You see, for us, it’s different, you know. We don’t get to watch our kids learn and grow. When it comes down to it, we just have to trust and believe, but honestly, that does next to nothing to relieve.

So please be sure to take advantage of the time you share, because getting reports via the tablet or phone seriously fails to compare. First steps, first words, senior prom, and all the rest that comes in between. You get to be there to smile, laugh, or even be a shoulder to cry on while we’re stuck nowhere to be seen.

Through the good or the bad, the dark and the sad, a kid is supposed to be able to rely on their dad. Yet here we sit, no matter the reason, clearly unfit, just trying to get by, doing our bit, feeling like a real piece of shit. All we want to do is be able to come home to the ones we love, wishing we could fly over these fences like a turtle dove.

If only we could fly like a bird high into the skies, then maybe we would finally feel right to dry our eyes. But we must not let our tears blur our vision, because we’re not the ones stuck out on the playground having to tell the other kids, “my daddy is in prison.”
